While getting sick or hurt on vacation is not desirable, it does happen. However, there are ways to prevent it that you should note. Preparation is the best way to combat any sickness and it’s important that you know what to do before you pack your bags.

What to bring
Other than your daily medications, you should bring a small first aid kit containing the basic necessities. It can be difficult to navigate pharmacies in foreign countries and sometimes they may not offer the products you need. We suggest bringing the basics: basic wound care (bandaids, anti-bacterial treatment, tweezers, etc), allergy and pain medications, anti-diarrheal medicine, hand sanitizer and whatever else you feel like you need.

Research
Knowing about any potential health problems prior to your travels is incredibly important. Read the news to see if there are any outbreaks where you are going and how to prevent from getting sick
Also, if traveling internationally, check the guidelines on CDC (http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/vaccinations.htm) to see if you need to get any specific immunizations prior to your visit.

Preventing Jetlag
If you’re worried about jet lag, there are ways that you can lessen the effects.
Avoiding alcohol and drinking plenty of water prior to your trip can help with jetlag. If taking a long flight, make sure to get up and walk around periodically to prevent your body from becoming too stiff.

On The Trip
Depending on the destination, you may need to stay away from the tap water. It is your research beforehand can help you figure out if the water is okay to drink.
Washing your hands can be a huge prevention tool while traveling. Bring hand sanitizer to make sure you’ll always have an easy way to keep your hands clean before meals and throughout the day.

When You Return
If you aren’t feeling well after you come back home, schedule an appointment with your health care professional as soon as possible.

We hope these tips will help you stay healthy on your next vacation!

Head west across America and you’ll discover the pioneering spirit of those who settled this great land. Be transported back in time to when the West was won. There’s an excitement here you won’t find anywhere else that stirs your sense of adventure. Perhaps it’s the majesty of the mountains, or the country’s most breathtaking national parks. Or the spacious skies where all you see for miles….is open land. This is the American West.

Ride the rails across Colorado through the rugged Rocky Mountains. Here, historic mountain towns bring back yesteryear with outlaw hideouts, gunslinger shows, thrilling rodeos and dude ranches. Colorado’s peaks are legendary, reaching more than 14,000 feet into the sky. But it’s her wonderful climate that makes the Rocky Mountain State a year-round vacation destination for those who love the white powdery stuff or those who prefer to explore on foot. President Theodore Roosevelt once heralded Colorado as the “Switzerland of America,” a reputation that remains today.

Under the bright Utah sky, you’ll find five National Parks and Monument Valley, making Utah America's national parks capital. Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Zion and Monument Valley Navajo Park are where adventure begins. These national treasures are located close together, allowing visitors to experience them all in one trip. Those who desire a little more activity will want to visit bustling Salt Lake City, with its 2002 Winter Olympic venues as well as Historic Temple Square, State Capitol and pioneer-era homes.

Nothing is more famous in South Dakota than Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills. Here presidential likenesses are perfectly chiseled out of mountains, representing the first 100 years of US history. Be there this year as Mount Rushmore celebrates its 70th anniversary. And add Custer State Park, the Lewis and Clark Trail and Badlands National Park to your itinerary.

Welcome to Wyoming! With majestic mountains, wide-open grasslands, glacial lakes and extraordinary wildlife, Wyoming will stop you at every turn. The crown jewel is Jackson Hole, comprised of two national parks. Grand Teton is a spectacular landscape, rich with jagged mountains and canyons. Yellowstone National Park is known for Old Faithful, the most famous geyser in the world that erupts almost every 30 minutes. See the world's biggest outdoor rodeo in Cheyenne, Buffalo Bill's old stomping grounds in Cody and Indian powwows in Wind River Country.

Nevada beckons with vast, open plains, spectacular painted deserts and magnificent mountains, named the silver state for its thriving gold, silver and copper mining. But her real claim to fame are the gaming meccas of Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe. World-class resorts, top name entertainment and the joy of winning keep Nevada one of America’s most popular vacation destinations.

The New Mexico landscape is filled with color and art, music and dance and a heritage of Indian cultures you won’t find in any other state. This is the land of enchantment. And what could be more glorious than hundreds of brilliantly colored hot air balloons floating in the Southwestern sky? The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta began in 1972 with 13 balloons and has grown to more than 700 from all over the world.

Arizona is the Grand Canyon State, overflowing with natural wonders and the rich cultural heritage of the Pueblo Indians. One of the "Seven Natural Wonders of the World", the Grand Canyon is America’s most famous natural attraction that stirs the soul with colorful strata of rock and billions of years of history. Carved over several millennia through the rocks of the Colorado Plateau, the Grand Canyon attracts nearly five million visitors each year.

The Golden State is more than just sun-kissed. It offers a world of sites for vacationers to experience. In San Francisco, the spirit of the Gold Rush lives on. Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf and Union Square give you a glimpse of history. Get a taste of chocolate at Ghirardelli Square, explore the wonders of Chinatown. A ride on a cable car and a cruise around San Francisco Bay ensure you’ll leave your heart. Heading out of the city, Wine Country, Sausalito and Muir Woods, home of the California Redwoods, are stunning examples of nature’s beauty.

Aloha from our 50th state. Made up of 132 islands, there’s no place on earth like Hawaii. Beautiful beaches, verdant forests, ancient mysteries and quiet volcanoes lure thousands of people each year to this tropical paradise. For every American, the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor is one memorial to see, a somber reminder of the price of freedom.

This is America’s West and Pacific. Come see it.

As we reflect on our commitment to the future of our planet – and our future existence, we find ourselves challenged with both social and environmental concerns that could make or break humankind.

Today brings a couple of questions to mind: How does travel affect our planet? Are we excellent stewards of our surroundings—here in the US or around the world—when we vacation?

This year’s Earth Day theme, A Billion Acts of Green, sums it up. For over 40 years, Earth Day—April 22—has inspired and mobilized individuals and organizations worldwide to demonstrate their commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. What about that water bottle you have with you on your hike? Is it refillable? The air-conditioner temperature in your vacation hotel room – is the air-conditioner on while you are not in the room? Did you dispose of your trash and recycle items appropriately or did you leave your trash on the beach or just throw it overboard on your day-boat sightseeing excursion?

Today and everyday, we must commit to stop and think about those little things – those Billion Acts of Green that you can be a part of when you travel. Think about motorcoach travel as an option – and the number of cars that are not on the road reducing carbon emissions. What will you do to help the Earth today and beyond?
