DAYS • 40 MEALS
Days
One through Three – Travel to Canada
We begin the adventure of a lifetime! Canada, with its Rocky
Mountains, rugged British Columbia Pacific Coast, and Yukon
Territory, await our exploration. We spend the first night in
Minnesota, before traveling to Winnipeg and then Regina in Canada.
(2 Dinners and 2 breakfasts)
Days Four and Five – Edmonton and the Mall
Edmonton – fur traders founded it, gold diggers settled
it, and the railroad made it a transportation hub. You visit
Fort Edmonton as well as the West Edmonton Mall. Considered
the largest shopping mall in the world, the West Edmonton Mall
has everything from a skating rink and sea lion show to an IMAX
theater. With 800 stores and no sales tax, it’s a shopper’s
paradise. (2 Breakfasts)
Day Six – Edmonton to Dawson Creek
We depart Alberta’s capital city this morning, and cross
the plains to Dawson Creek in Northern British Columbia, a major
transportation center and the start of the historic Alaska Highway.
(Breakfast)
Day
Seven – Dawson to Fort Nelson
Departing Dawson Creek, we travel through the fur trading territory
that added to the fortunes of the Hudson Bay Company. Tonight,
we arrive in Fort Nelson, an old iron and silver mining town.
(Breakfast)
Day Eight – Fort Nelson to Watson Lake
Today we travel the shore of scenic Muncho Lake with its blue-green
water, heading toward Watson Lake. The evening is free
to enjoy the nightly activities and warm friendship extended
by this town to travelers. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day Nine – Watson Lake to Whitehorse
We journey across the rugged Yukon wilderness to Whitehorse,
the capital of the Yukon and best known for its forest of 4,000
signposts. We stop at the reception center for a tour of the
SS Klondike, a grand old sternwheeler. Tonight, we enjoy a Gay
‘90s vaudeville revue with comedy routines, skits and
high-kicking dancing girls at the Frantic Follies. (Breakfast
and dinner)
Day Ten – Whitehorse to Tok
We get our first sight of Alaska today as we cross the border
from the Yukon Territory. We enter the small Alaskan town of
Tok with its sod and wildflower-covered log homes and old fish
wheels. In late afternoon be on the lookout for the aroma of
ribs barbequing and salmon baking. (Breakfast)
Day Eleven – Tok to Anchorage
Our travels to Anchorage take us through the Wrangell-Saint
Elias National Park and Preserve, tracing the Copper River.
After a brief visit to a musk ox farm we continue through beautiful
scenery to our home for the next two nights, Anchorage. Dinner
tonight is at the Sourdough Mining Company. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day Twelve – Glacier Cruising
This morning we tour Anchorage before heading to the small town
of Whittier located on Prince William Sound. Here we board the
Klondike Express, the most luxurious high-speed catamaran in
Alaska, for an unforgettable cruise of Prince William Sound.
The sheltered waters of the Sound offer excellent wildlife viewing
of the abundant sea lions, whales, otters and seals. Enjoy lunch
while taking in some of the most spectacular scenery in Alaska.
See the 26 glaciers that line College and Harriman fjords. (Breakfast
and lunch)
Day Thirteen – Anchorage to Denali
Travel north from Anchorage along the George Parks Highway to
the Iditarod Trail Headquarters where we learn about this famous
race and visit the museum. Then it’s on to the quaint
town of Talkeetna for a brief visit before arriving in Denali
National Park. Tonight, you can sample the local food at Cabin
Nite, where you will enjoy an all-you-can-eat Alaskan dinner.
Then sit back for a hilarious show of tall tales and foot-stompin’
music. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day Fourteen – Denali National Park
A local guide conducts today’s Wildlife Tour of Denali.
A picnic lunch is included. Weather permitting, we will see
America’s tallest mountain at 20,230 feet – Mt.
McKinley. Be on the lookout for the caribou, grizzly, wolves
and Dall sheep that inhabit the park. (Breakfast and lunch)
Day
Fifteen – Alaska Railroad to Fairbanks
There is time this morning to relax and immerse yourself in
the natural beauty of Denali. Here you can take an optional
helicopter ride through the park, or try a once-in-a-lifetime
float trip on the Nenana River. This afternoon, we board the
Alaska Railroad and travel to Fairbanks. (Breakfast)
Day Sixteen – Fairbanks
This morning we tour Fairbanks. Your guide will present the
colorful past and exciting present in Alaska’s second-largest
city. Then we cast off aboard the Riverboat Discovery, the only
authentic sternwheeler in Alaska. We will go to Old Chena Village
where native Alaskans show the culture and lifestyle of the
original Alaskans. Tonight, we dine on an array of king salmon,
halibut and ribs while we take in the fun and frivolity of the
Palace Saloon where we are entertained by their musical show,
the Golden Heart Revue.
(Breakfast and dinner)
Day Seventeen – Fairbanks to Beaver Creek
Traveling back into the Yukon Territory we wind our way through
some of the most beautiful, unspoiled land in Canada. Arriving
in Beaver Creek, we can freshen up before tonight’s dinner
show at the Rendezvous Dinner Theatre – a fun look at
Yukon history from the gold rush to more current events. (Breakfast
and dinner)
Day
Eighteen – Beaver Creek to Whitehorse
We continue to enjoy Canada’s Yukon Territory, the location
of one of the most exciting times in history – the “Gold
Rush.” Upon reaching Whitehorse, thousands of gold miners
constructed anything floatable to continue their trip up the
Yukon River. We travel their route in somewhat better style
as we motorcoach through the vast terrain that has barely changed
since the days of these fortune seekers. (Breakfast)
Day
Nineteen – Whitehorse to Skagway
As we make our way into British Columbia we arrive at Fraser
where we board the Yukon and Whitepass Railroad for our next
destination, Skagway. The train offers us a great chance to
view the mountainous terrain that gold miners came to respect.
Over 100 years ago the first boatload of stampeders, bound for
the Klondike and the lure of gold, landed in Skagway, just as
we do today. (Breakfast)
Day Twenty – The Alaska Marine Highway
Today we begin a journey that is even more impressive than what
we have already seen. We board the Alaska ferry Matanuska for
a cruise through the famous Alaska Inside Passage and Lynn Canal.
We stay in modest cabins during our two-night excursion aboard
the ferry. (Breakfast)
Day Twenty One – Cruising the Inside Passage
Glaciers, wildlife and spectacular scenery are the order of
the day as we ply the Inside Passage. We are en route to Prince
Rupert – called the “Gateway to Alaska.” Ships
and ferries en route to the glaciers and fjords of the north
often stop here.
Day
Twenty Two – Prince Rupert to Prince George
Today we traverse the Frasier Plateau and bid farewell to the
Pacific Ocean as we head toward Prince George. Here you will
find a cultural blend of sophistication and rugged wilderness
in this remote Canadian city.
Day
Twenty Three – Prince George to Jasper
Crossing the magnificent Canadian Rockies, we enter Jasper National
Park, a wilderness carved by nature and populated with a variety
of wildlife. We arrive with time to explore this delightful
mountain town. Dinner is scheduled at our hotel tonight. (Breakfast
and dinner)
Day Twenty Four – Jasper to Banff
This morning we enjoy a cruise on Maligne Lake with its exceptional
views. Watch moose lazily wander the shoreline and be on the
lookout for other wildlife that inhabit the park. Then we board
a snocoach for an unusual ride across the Columbia Icefields
and Athabasca Glacier before arriving in Banff. (Breakfast)
Day Twenty Five – Banff and Lake Louise Sightseeing
We sightsee in this delightful region today. A ride on the Sulphur
Mountain Gondola to its peak gives you an unforgettable view
of Banff and the surrounding area. Then, it’s just a short
drive to Lake Louise where we visit Chateau Lake Louise with
its incomparable view. Dinner tonight is a special experience
at the Banff Springs Hotel. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day Twenty Six – Banff to Calgary
We arrive in Calgary this morning and begin a city tour, which
will include a stop at Olympic Park for a guided visit. Tonight
we dine high atop the Calgary Tower with a fabulous panoramic
view of the city. (Breakfast and dinner)
Days Twenty Seven through Thirty –
Regina, Winnipeg, Minnesota and Home
We begin our journey homeward this morning, but there is still
plenty of fun to be had along the way. In Winnipeg we have a
“Prairie Sunset” evening dinner-cruise on the River
Rouge. In Minnesota, we’ll share a delightful farewell
dinner with our new-found friends. Thank you for joining us
on this truly great lifetime experience. (2 Breakfasts and 2
dinners)
