Days
One and Two – Traveling East
Your journey to the Carolina Coast begins in Ohio where we overnight
and enjoy a get-acquainted dinner before continuing on to Virginia.
(Dinner and breakfast)
Day
Three – Currituck Heritage Park and Lighthouse
Arriving in the Outer Banks today we visit the only lighthouse
in North Carolina that is still housed in its original structure.
Built in 1874, Currituck Beach Lighthouse stands 158 feet tall.
We also visit the Whalehead Club at Currituck Heritage Park,
a 1925 restored historic house museum originally built as a
private residence by wealthy Philadelphia industrialist Edward
Collings-Knight, Jr. This art nouveau styled home was built
for he and his wife who were avid water fowl hunters. Later,
we arrive at our hotel, located on the beach in Nags Head and
our home for the next three nights. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day
Four – Roanoke Island Touring
Our touring today begins at Jockey’s Ridge State Park
to see the tallest living sand dunes on the East Coast. We learn
how these shifting sands move with the wind. Then, we venture
to Roanoke Island where we see Elizabeth II, a 69-foot sailing
vessel representative of those that sailed to the New World
in 1585. We also visit the Roanoke Island Adventure Museum and
Settlement Site where we will see what life was like for the
early arrivals to the region. After some free time for lunch
and shopping in downtown historic Manteo, we visit the North
Carolina Aquarium to learn about the many coastal environments
on the barrier islands and see the 285,000-gallon Graveyard
of the Atlantic tank. Enjoy some free time this afternoon to
relax at the hotel or perhaps take a leisurely stroll along
the beach. (Breakfast)
Day
Five – Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke Island
A local guide joins us today as we work our way along the Cape
Hatteras National Seashore. We see the Bodie Island Lighthouse,
with its distinctive black and white bands, and visit the Chicamacomico
Life Saving Station. Here, you will learn of daring ocean rescues
by the brave men who were the predecessor to today’s U.S.
Coast Guard. The Ocracoke Island Visitor Center reveals the
history of the famous pirate Blackbeard, who made many a plunder
along its shores. There is a Blackbeard exhibit at Teach’s
Hole, a British Cemetery and even wild horses, called “Banker
Ponies” to be found here. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day Six – Kitty Hawk
Before departing the Outer Banks today we can see what brought
Orville and Wilbur Wright here. The wind, sand and a dream of
flight are what led to the first successful airplane flight
on that cold day in December of 1903. We learn how these self-taught
engineers changed the world armed with courage, perseverance
and teamwork and see the new flight museum which features exhibits
from the First Flight Centennial Celebration. Later, we continue
to Winston-Salem for an overnight. (Breakfast)

We begin our journey home with a stop in Kovington, Kentucky,
for a farewell dinner hosted by your Tour Manager. Then, we
continue home filled with fabulous memories of your visit the
