Day Two — Berlin, Germany Upon arrival at Berlin’s Tegel Airport, you’ll be met by a Mayflower Tours representative and transferred to your hotel. All flights should arrive by 4:00pm. The remainder of the day is at leisure to get acquainted with your new surroundings. This evening, join your Tour Manager and traveling companions for an included dinner. Dinner Day Three — Berlin Home to renowned universities, research institutes, orchestras, museums and celebrities, this morning’s tour will show you the highlights of this historic city. Grand boulevards, famous avenues, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, historic buildings, and of course the Brandenburg Gate will all be seen on this guided excursion. The remainder of the day is at leisure for you to do as you please. Breakfast Day Four — Berlin to Wittenberg via Potsdam Departing Berlin, travel to Potsdam, a city of world cultural heritage and former residence of the Prussian Kings and German Kaiser. Get a glimpse of historic Prussia during the guided visit of Sanssouci Palace — the largest World Heritage Site in Germany. As you tour the palace, see many of its treasures including the white and gold Marble Hall reception area, loosely based on the Pantheon in Rome; paintings by Friedrich’s favorite artist, Antoine Watteau; and the Voltaire Room with its carvings of birds, flowers and fruits (named after the French philosopher who was a frequent guest of the palace). During the free time, stroll through the landscaped park with its fountains, faux ruins, classical statues and the ornate Chinese House pavilion. Continue on to Wittenberg, a picturesque village that was the centre of religious and cultural life in Europe in the 16th century thanks to the work of Martin Luther and other reformers. Enjoy an included dinner this evening. Breakfast and dinner Day Five — Wittenberg to Dresden As a local guide leads you on a walk through this historic city, see the Market Square with its Renaissance Town Hall, statue of Martin Luther and the Schlosskirche (Castle Church). It was on the doors of this church that Luther nailed his 95 theses in 1517. Originally wooden doors, they were burnt in 1760 and replaced in 1858 by bronze doors bearing the Latin text of the theses. Visit Martin Luther’s home where he studied and lived both before and after the Reformation and see the house of Lucas Cranach the Elder (Mayor of Wittenberg) as you stroll through the city. This afternoon, continue on to Dresden, the capital city of Saxony, which has enjoyed a long history as a royal residence for kings who embellished the city with cultural and artistic splendor. Upon arrival, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Breakfast Day Six — Dresden Discover this city of architectural masterpieces during the guided walking tour. See the Theaterplatz, a beautiful square in the city centre, on the banks of the Elbe River, which houses some of Dresden’s most important buildings. The most prominent is the Semper Opera House, originally known as the Hoftheater, which is how the square got its name. The west wing of the Zwinger Palace, home to two museums, an art gallery, an armory and gardens with fountains, the Baroque Hofkirche (Cathedral) and the Altstädter Wache (Old Town Watchtower) are other historic buildings of the square. King Johann, ruler of Saxony from 1854 until 1873, continues to watch over his city from the large equestrian statue in the center of the Theaterplatz. After the walking tour, relax aboard a sightseeing cruise on the Elbe River where you’ll see the beautiful skyline of Dresden’s historic city centre with the Church of Our Lady, the cathedral, Albrechtsberg Castle, Lingnerschloss Castle, Eckberg Castle, and the Loschwitz Bridge, also known as the "Blue Wonder." After a morning of sightseeing, the afternoon and evening are free of planned activities. Breakfast Day Seven — Dresden to Berlin via Eisleben the last day of the tour, depart Dresden for the town of Eisleben, known as the hometown of Martin Luther. During the guided walking tour, see the Altstadt (Old Town) and visit the Luther House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and museum dedicated to his life and teachings. Visit the St. Peter and Paul Church where he was baptized and the gothic St. Andreas Church where Luther preached his final sermons. The pulpit is still preserved in its original location as a tribute to this influential reformer. This afternoon, return to Berlin for an afternoon at leisure. Tonight’s farewell dinner is held at a local restaurant. Breakfast and dinner Day Eight — Berlin/USA After breakfast, depart the hotel for your transfer to Berlin’s Tegel Airport. Bid "auf wiedersehen" to Germany as you depart on your flight home with fond memories of the time spent in this historically beautiful country. Breakfast
