Day One — Lewis & Clark and the Mighty Mississippi We begin a search for our pioneering spirit at the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center. Here, see exhibits and dioramas highlighting their expedition and see full-scale replicas of their boats. In downtown Saint Louis, we see the newly-remodeled Gateway Arch Experience and board our waiting riverboat for a cruise along the mighty Mississippi River. Dinner Day Two — Old Santa Fe Trail Covered Wagon Ride Motoring across Missouri we arrive in the town of Independence. Here, a hearty Chuckwagon lunch awaits next to the historic 1879 Chicago Alton Depot, on the campground used by the pioneers. Then, we board our covered wagons for a narrated tour of the Old Santa Fe Trail. Hold on tight as we see the home where Bess Truman was born and circle the prestigious Bingham-Waggoner estate. Back in camp, we visit the National Frontier Trails Museum. This interpretive center and research library is dedicated to telling the rich history of America’s three principal western trails, the Santa Fe, Oregon and California. Breakfast and lunch Day Three — Harry S. Truman and Old Cowtown Museum Begin today at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, the first presidential library created under the 1955 Presidential Libraries Act. Learn all about Truman, the straight-talking Midwesterner who became the nation’s 33rd president and one of America’s most beloved. We stop at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Historic Site, the last remaining stagecoach stop along the Santa Fe Trail to see the two-story icehouse and wooden peg barn. In Wichita, we visit the Old Cowtown Museum. Experience life in the west during the mid-1800s in this living history frontier town, through its costumed interpreters and historic structures. Be on the lookout though, you never know when a gunfight might break out. Breakfast Day Four — Big Well and Boot Hill A stop at Big Well, the world’s largest hand dug well, shows us this marvel of pioneer engineering. At Boot Hill Museum the history of the Old West is preserved through its collection of artifacts and buildings. Tonight, enjoy a Chuckwagon Dinner complete with a live stage show. Breakfast and dinner Day Five — Dodge City Days Festival and Evening Rodeo Begin the day with a narrated tour of Dodge City before taking in the best of the Dodge City Days Festival. From the fine art displays and tours of the historic Santa Fe Depot to the excitement of the Miss Rodeo Kansas and Teen Pageant Horsemanship displays. Later, we attend the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo for an evening of excitement at one of the nation’s premier Rodeos. Breakfast and dinner Day Six — Wizard of Oz Museum and Plumlee Buffalo Ranch No trip to Kansas is complete without a visit to Wizard of Oz Museum. Then, we pay a visit to the Plumlee Buffalo Ranch for an up close and personal tour of the ranch’s inhabitants. Breakfast and dinner Day Seven — Kansas Museum of History and the Pony Express Trail At the Kansas Museum of History, exhibits present the state’s history from the Civil War and Native American heritage with a full sized Cheyenne tipi, to the Santa Fe Railroad’s oldest surviving locomotive from 1880. One of the great stories of the American West is that of the Pony Express. In St. Joseph we visit the original livery stable where the first rider, Johnny Fry left on April 3, 1860, which was a successful venture for only 19 months when the Pacific Telegraph line was completed. A stop at the Walter Cronkite Memorial which is dedicated to this famed TV anchor is planned. Tonight, our farewell dinner is highlighted by a visit from Calamity Jane and Miss Lizzie who provide some rousing Western entertainment guaranteed to please. Be on the lookout, as that rogue Jessie James might make an appearance. Breakfast and dinner Day Eight — Travel Home With our Pioneering Spirit renewed, we arrive home today in the late afternoon.
